Green Chef
Green Chef UK review: a nutrition-led recipe box for specific goals
Our verdict: Green Chef is one of the more useful UK recipe boxes for people who want meals filtered around a clear nutrition goal, rather than simply a large list of dinner ideas. Its strongest options are keto, lower carb, high protein and calorie conscious, alongside vegan, vegetarian and pescatarian recipes.
The trade-off is price. At normal rates Green Chef sits above mainstream boxes such as HelloFresh and Gousto, and delivery, add-ons and selected recipe upgrades can increase the total. It makes most sense if the nutrition labels save you genuine planning time; if you mainly want inexpensive family dinners or the widest possible menu, another service is likely to offer better value.

What can you expect from the box?
Green Chef at a glance
- Best for: couples or four-person households wanting keto, lower-carb, high-protein, calorie-conscious or plant-based recipe kits.
- Weekly choice: Green Chef currently advertises 35+ recipes, plus optional add-ons.
- Diet preferences: keto, high protein, calorie conscious, vegetarian, vegan, lower carb, pescatarian and “I eat everything”. Preferences affect recommendations; you can still mix recipes across the menu.
- Box sizes: two or four people, with two to five recipes per week. The smallest box therefore contains four portions.
- Normal price: premium. As a verified reference point, four recipes for two people was £54 (£6.75 per serving) when checked on 21 August 2026, before delivery or chargeable extras.
- Subscription: weekly and automatically renewing; there is no one-off box option.
- Flexibility: skip as many weeks as you like or cancel, provided changes are made by 11:59pm five days before delivery.
- Important limitation: Green Chef does not currently offer a dedicated gluten-free plan. Always check the recipe-level allergen information.
What do you receive in a Green Chef box?
You choose recipes online or in the app, then receive the measured ingredients and step-by-step instructions needed to cook them at home. Some sauces and vegetables arrive partly prepared, but this remains a recipe kit rather than a ready-meal service: you will chop, cook and wash up.
Recipe pages and cards show cooking steps, timings, ingredients, allergens and nutritional information. Green Chef says most dinners are ready in around 30 minutes or less, although that should be treated as a guide. In an independent UK test published by The Independent in May 2026, the reviewer found that preparation added roughly 10–15 minutes to the stated cooking time.
As with most recipe boxes, cupboard basics such as oil, salt or pepper may be required. Check each recipe before delivery rather than assuming every minor ingredient is included.

Recipes
Green Chef offers 35+ recipes each week, covering options such as keto, high protein, calorie conscious, lower carb, vegan, vegetarian and pescatarian. Your selected preference determines which recipes appear first, but you can mix and match dishes from across the weekly menu.
Subscription, skipping and cancellation
Green Chef is an automatically renewing weekly subscription. It does not currently sell a normal one-off trial box. If you take an introductory deal and do nothing afterwards, future scheduled boxes continue at the applicable price.
You can change recipes, preferences, box size and address, skip a week or cancel without a minimum commitment. Green Chef’s current deadline is 11:59pm, five days before the delivery date. For example, the deadline for a Saturday box is Monday at 11:59pm.
You can skip multiple weeks, but each scheduled delivery should be checked in your account or app. Changes to the first order other than recipe selection may require Customer Care. Keep the confirmation when cancelling or skipping, and check that no unedited future delivery remains scheduled.
Delivery
Where and when does Green Chef deliver?
Green Chef currently offers UK delivery from Monday to Saturday, subject to postcode availability. The fee varies by address; Green Chef says non-mainland delivery costs more, and shorter delivery windows may carry a surcharge in some mainland areas.
Because the public price depends on the delivery address, enter your postcode and inspect the final checkout summary before subscribing. Confirm the delivery day, fee and any selected time-window charge rather than relying on a generic national figure.
Green Chef Recipes
Menu, recipe choice and nutrition labels
Green Chef currently promotes more than 35 recipes each week. That is a meaningful improvement on the 22-recipe figure previously shown on this page, but the real value is in how the menu is labelled.
The eight selectable preferences are keto, high protein, calorie conscious, vegetarian, vegan, lower carb, pescatarian and “I eat everything”. Choosing one does not lock the whole box to that category; it changes which dishes Green Chef recommends first, and you can mix and match from the wider weekly menu.
- Keto: Green Chef states no more than 20g carbohydrate per serving.
- Lower carb: Green Chef’s current main site states under 35g carbohydrate, although some older pages still use different wording. Check the label on the individual recipe.
- High protein: currently presented as 35g–70g protein per recipe.
- Calorie conscious: currently labelled at under 550 kcal.
- Vegetarian and vegan: dedicated plant-based choices are available, but the number in each category varies by week.
- Pescatarian: fish, vegetarian and vegan options are prioritised.
These labels make Green Chef more purposeful than a general “healthy” filter, but they do not make every meal low calorie, low carb or appropriate for every medical diet. Read the recipe’s own nutrition panel before selecting it.
Diets, allergies and ingredient swaps
Green Chef is well organised for preferences, but preferences and allergies are not the same thing. The company currently says it does not offer a dedicated gluten-free plan. Some individual recipes may contain no gluten-containing ingredients, but Green Chef leaves customers to decide whether each recipe is suitable.
Check the full ingredient and allergen information every week, including when reordering a familiar dish. Recipes can change, and ingredients are handled within a wider production and supply environment. Anyone with a serious allergy, coeliac disease or a medically prescribed diet should contact Green Chef before ordering and should not rely on category names alone.
Some recipes allow selected swaps or upgrades, such as an alternative protein or carbohydrate. These can change both the nutrition and the price, so review the final basket rather than assuming the base recipe label still applies unchanged.
If avoiding gluten or dairy is central to your choice, compare Mindful Chef and our gluten-free meal-box guide as well. Suitability still needs to be confirmed directly with the provider.
What was our personal experience with Green Chef like?
Our first-hand Green Chef experience
Testing note: TooManyFoodboxes has not tested the current UK Green Chef service. Our first-hand experience comes from a Green Chef box ordered and cooked by our Dutch sister site, Foodboxen.nl, in the Netherlands in December 2022. It is useful for describing the cooking experience, but not for proving current UK prices, delivery terms or menu availability.
The Dutch test contained four flexitarian recipes: okonomiyaki with bacon, vegetarian moussaka, salmon with butter sauce and spring onion, and a lentil salad with fried halloumi. The testers particularly liked the okonomiyaki and moussaka and felt that the recipes introduced ideas they would not normally have cooked.
The printed recipe cards were missing from the original delivery. Instructions were available in the Green Chef app, and the cards were sent separately the following day. That was one delivery in another country several years ago, so it should be read as a specific incident rather than a claim about current UK reliability.

What Green Chef does well
- Clear, measurable menu labels for keto, lower-carb, high-protein and calorie-conscious eating.
- You can mix recipes from different preferences instead of committing the whole household to one plan.
- Nutrition information and allergens are shown at recipe level.
- The two- or four-person format works well for couples and some families.
- Skipping and cancellation are flexible when completed before the deadline.
- Independent UK testing in 2026 found good-quality produce and straightforward recipe cards.
Points to consider
- Full-price boxes are expensive compared with mainstream recipe kits.
- No box for one person; solo customers must cook two portions or keep leftovers.
- No dedicated gluten-free preference, and category labels do not remove the need to check allergens.
- The five-day deadline is earlier than some people expect; missing it can mean the next box is charged and dispatched.
- Premium recipes, swaps, shorter delivery windows and add-ons may cost extra.
- Individual packaging remains a drawback. A 2026 independent tester thought too many ingredients were wrapped in plastic.
Who is Green Chef best for?
- People who want fresh cooking kits aligned with keto, lower-carb, high-protein or calorie-conscious targets.
- Couples who will use two portions per dinner, or solo cooks happy to keep a second portion.
- Four-person households whose tastes are compatible with a nutrition-led menu.
- Anyone who values detailed nutrition labels enough to justify a premium over a mainstream kit.
Who should probably choose something else?
- Budget-focused households: start with HelloFresh or Gousto and compare full prices.
- People wanting the broadest weekly choice: Gousto is usually the stronger starting point.
- Families wanting familiar, mainstream dinners: HelloFresh is generally easier to navigate as an all-rounder.
- People with strict gluten-related requirements: Green Chef has no dedicated gluten-free plan. Investigate specialist alternatives and verify cross-contamination controls directly.
- Anyone who does not want to cook: choose a prepared-meal service from our ready-meal comparison instead.

Green Chef Pricing & Costs
How much does Green Chef cost at normal price?
Green Chef uses sliding prices: larger boxes generally reduce the cost per serving. Always compare the normal subscription price, not just the heavily discounted first delivery.
| Example box | Normal box price | Price per serving | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 recipes for 2 people | £33.00 | £8.25 | Smallest box; four servings |
| 4 recipes for 2 people | £54.00 | £6.75 | Eight servings; verified in Green Chef’s plan selector on 21 August 2026 |
| 4 recipes for 4 people | £95.84 | £5.99 | Sixteen servings |
The smallest and largest examples above were also reported in an independent UK review published in May 2026. Prices can change. Delivery is not included in this table and varies by address; non-mainland delivery and shorter windows may cost more. Recipe upgrades, swaps and add-ons are separate.
A realistic comparison for two people choosing four dinners is therefore £54 plus delivery per week before any premium choices. The price per serving is £54 ÷ 8 = £6.75.
Introductory offer
When last checked, Green Chef advertised 40% off the first box with free first-box delivery, followed by 25% off the next four boxes. Green Chef vs HelloFresh, Gousto and Mindful Chef
| Service | Best reason to choose it | Choose another when… |
|---|---|---|
| Green Chef | You want explicit keto, lower-carb, high-protein or calorie-conscious recipe filtering. | You mainly want the cheapest or broadest family menu. |
| HelloFresh | You want an accessible mainstream all-rounder with familiar recipes for couples or families. | A structured specialist diet is the main reason you are ordering. |
| Gousto | Weekly recipe breadth and household flexibility matter most. | You want a menu designed first around keto or macro-style goals. |
| Mindful Chef | You want a close premium-health comparison, particularly when ingredient exclusions or a broader healthy-food range matter. | You specifically want Green Chef’s keto and lower-carb labelling, or Green Chef prices better for your box. |
Green Chef and HelloFresh are part of the same HelloFresh Group and share some operational scale, but they target different decisions. HelloFresh starts with broad dinner convenience; Green Chef starts with nutrition preferences. Compare the actual menus side by side, because ownership does not make the recipes, prices or plans identical.
