Recipe Kits and Boxes

Recipe boxes in the UK

Updated 17 September 2026. Research-based comparison, not a hands-on test. How we review

Which UK recipe box is right for you?

A recipe box sends ingredients and a card, and you cook. Where they differ is how much choice you get each week, whether the menu is built around anything in particular, and in a few cases whether you are buying ingredients at all.

  • Gousto: Biggest menu, with a real one-person box. Normal price: £5.38 a portion for 3 recipes for 2 people.
  • HelloFresh: More than 50 recipes a week, boxes for two to four. Normal price: £5.49 a portion for 3 meals for 2 people.
  • Green Chef: Diet plans, including the only mainstream keto plan. Normal price: £6.75 a portion for 3 meals for 2 people.
  • Mindful Chef: Health-led and mostly gluten-free. Normal price: £6.75 a portion for the 2-person box.
  • Riverford: Organic, one recipe per box, no subscription. Normal price: £7.50 a portion for a recipe box for 2.
  • Grubby: Entirely plant-based. Normal price: £6.46 a portion for 3 kits for 2 people.

We compare like for like where we can: the normal price for three recipes for two people, not the cheapest large box and not an introductory offer.

How to use this recipe kit overview

This page is meant to be practical. You can filter the boxes by number of people, frequency and brand, but it helps to start with the kind of problem you want solved.

For easy family dinners, start with HelloFresh and Gousto. They are the most obvious all-round recipe kit comparisons.
For more recipe choice, Gousto is usually one of the strongest starting points.
For diet goals, compare Green Chef and Mindful Chef, especially if you are looking for low carb, keto, high protein, gluten-free or calorie-conscious meals.
For organic and seasonal cooking, Riverford is a more natural fit than a standard mainstream recipe box.
For plant-based cooking, Grubby is worth comparing alongside the vegan and vegetarian options from the bigger boxes.
For lighter cooking help, SimplyCook is different from a full meal box because you still buy the fresh ingredients yourself.

Recipe kit, meal box or specialist food box?

Not every box in this category works in exactly the same way. A classic recipe kit usually sends pre-portioned ingredients and recipe cards. A specialist box might focus on pasta, plant-based recipes, organic produce or flavour kits. That does not make one type better than the other, but it does mean you should compare them with the right expectations.

If you want a full dinner solution, choose a proper recipe kit. If you still like doing your own supermarket shop but want more inspiration, a flavour kit may be enough. If you care most about sourcing and produce, an organic box may be the better starting point.

Which recipe kit is best?

There is no single best recipe kit for everyone. A family that wants quick weeknight meals will probably choose differently from someone who wants high-protein dinners, organic vegetables or more adventurous cooking.

Our honest starting point is simple: compare HelloFresh and Gousto first if you want an easy all-round recipe box. Look at Green Chef or Mindful Chef if health and diet are more important. Look at Riverford if organic seasonal food matters more than maximum choice. And if you are still unsure, use our meal box chooser to get a quick recommendation.

Are recipe kits worth it?

Recipe kits are not usually the cheapest way to eat if you compare only the raw ingredients. A careful supermarket shop will often cost less. But that is not the whole comparison.

A good meal box can reduce food waste, cut down on extra shopping trips, make weeknights easier and stop you falling back on takeaways. For some households, that makes the value better than the headline price first suggests.

The best approach is to try a box for a few weeks and judge whether it actually makes your routine easier. The first discounted box is nice, but the real test is whether you would keep using it once the novelty has worn off.

Recipe kit, flavour kit or specialist box?

A full recipe kit sends every ingredient in measured amounts, plus a recipe card: Gousto, HelloFresh, Green Chef, Mindful Chef and Grubby work this way, and Riverford sells one recipe per box. A flavour kit such as SimplyCook only sends pastes, spices and stocks, and you buy the fresh food yourself, which is why it looks so cheap per kit. A specialist box such as Pasta Evangelists and The Cookaway is built around one kind of food or an occasion rather than weekly dinners.

The recipe boxes at a glance

Gousto

Recipe box

Gousto has the biggest weekly menu of the UK recipe boxes and is one of only two mainstream kits with a real one-person box. Boxes run from one to five people, so it adapts to most households. Single portions are the expensive way to use it.

Normal price: From £3.20 a portion

New-customer offer: 50% off your first box (checked 17 September 2026)

HelloFresh

Recipe box

HelloFresh is the familiar all-round choice for straightforward family dinners, with more than 50 recipes a week and boxes for two, three or four people. There is no one-person box: solo customers cook a two-person recipe and keep the second portion.

Normal price: From £3.99 a serving

New-customer offer: 50% off your first box (checked 17 September 2026)

Green Chef

Diet-led recipe box

Green Chef is the HelloFresh group's diet-led brand and the only mainstream UK kit with a real keto plan, capped at 20g net carbs a serving. That focus is the reason to choose it. It costs more per serving than most kits, has no gluten-free option and no one-off orders.

Normal price: From £6.25 a serving

New-customer offer: 40% off your first box (checked 17 September 2026)

Mindful Chef

Health-led recipe box

Mindful Chef is the premium, health-led option: mostly gluten-free recipes, no refined carbohydrates and real one, two and four person boxes. It has started adding a few recipes with gluten to the family menu, so check each recipe if you avoid gluten. It suits people who already eat this way more than people chasing the lowest price.

Normal price: From £6.75 a portion for 2

New-customer offer: 25% to 30% off your first 4 boxes (checked 17 September 2026)

Riverford

Organic recipe boxes and veg boxes

Riverford is an organic grower first and a recipe box second. Each recipe box now holds a single dish, mostly for two, which you add to a veg or meat order. Delivery is free and there is no subscription, but the recipe choice is small and the price per serving sits above the mainstream kits.

Normal price: Recipe boxes from £15

New-customer offer: Free chopping board on your first order (checked 16 September 2026)

Grubby

Plant-based recipe box

Grubby is a fully vegan recipe box with useful allergen filters and a separate range of frozen single-portion meals. The meal kits start at two people and cost more per meal than Gousto or HelloFresh.

Normal price: From £4.49 a meal

New-customer offer: 30% off your first box (checked 17 September 2026)

SimplyCook

Flavour kit

SimplyCook is not a full recipe box. It posts four flavour kits of pastes, spices and stocks through your letterbox, and you buy the meat, fish and vegetables yourself. That makes it the cheapest way to cook new recipes, but not a way to skip the shop.

Normal price: £9.99 for 4 flavour kits

New-customer offer: First box for £5 including postage (checked 17 September 2026)

Pasta Evangelists

Specialist pasta kits

Pasta Evangelists sells fresh pasta and sauce kits that take about 20 minutes to finish. You can order single portions without a subscription, which makes it easy for one person, but it is a pasta treat rather than a replacement for a weekly recipe box.

Normal price: From £6.50 a portion

New-customer offer: 20% off your first 3 subscription orders (checked 17 September 2026)

The Cookaway

Occasion recipe box

The Cookaway sells restaurant-style world food menus for a night in or as a gift, with free delivery and no subscription. At £14 or more a serving it is a treat, not a routine way to cover weekday dinners.

Normal price: From £42 a box

New-customer offer: 10% off, plus £5 off your next 5 orders (checked 17 September 2026)
