Vegetarian

Fresh and flavorful vegetarian meal boxes

Vegetarian is the best-supported diet on the UK recipe box market, nearly every provider runs a vegetarian range, and several let you set your whole subscription to meat-free. That means the real decision isn’t which provider offers vegetarian, it’s which one gives you enough recipe variety that you’re not eating the same halloumi traybake every other week. Below, we compare the providers with the widest and most consistent vegetarian menus.

Vegetarian recipe boxes

Vegetarian meal boxes are the most widely supported diet category on the UK recipe box market, almost every mainstream provider runs a dedicated vegetarian range, and some let you set the whole subscription to vegetarian-only. That makes this less about finding a provider that does vegetarian at all, and more about which one has the recipe variety to stop it feeling repetitive.

What kind of vegetarian options are available?

  • A vegetarian-only subscription setting. Several providers let you switch your whole box to vegetarian, so every recipe that week is automatically meat-free.
  • A vegetarian filter within a mixed menu. Larger providers run vegetarian recipes alongside their standard menu, useful if only some of the household needs meat-free meals.
  • Vegetarian-first providers. A smaller number of boxes are built meat-free from the ground up, rather than filtering meat out of an omnivore menu.

How to compare vegetarian meal boxes

Look at how many vegetarian recipes are actually on the weekly menu, not just whether a vegetarian filter exists, providers with a bigger overall recipe library tend to offer more vegetarian variety too. It’s also worth checking whether the vegetarian recipes lean on repeated staples like halloumi and plant-based mince, or whether there’s genuine variety in cuisines and ingredients week to week.

Which vegetarian box should you choose?

Gousto’s large recipe library gives it the most vegetarian variety week to week, useful if you’re cooking meat-free most of the time and don’t want to repeat dishes. HelloFresh and Green Chef both let you set your whole box to vegetarian, so every recipe that week is automatically meat-free without you filtering anything yourself. Riverford takes a different approach again, built around seasonal vegetables rather than a diet tag, worth comparing if you want produce-led cooking over recipe-card convenience.

We’ve tested HelloFresh and Green Chef ourselves, though so far only their Dutch meal boxes rather than the UK versions, so we can’t speak to the UK vegetarian menu first-hand. We haven’t tested Gousto or Riverford ourselves, those recommendations are based on their published recipe ranges rather than hands-on experience.

Who are vegetarian meal boxes best for?

Anyone eating meat-free some or all of the time, and households where only part of the group needs vegetarian meals, since most providers let you mix vegetarian and standard recipes within the same box. If you’re vegan rather than vegetarian, our vegan meal boxes category is worth comparing too.
