Calorie-conscious meal boxes and prepared meals in the UK

Updated 16 September 2026. Research-based comparison, not a hands-on test. How we review

We sort services by how far they actually cater for a calorie-conscious diet: built around it, a proper menu option or filter, or only a few suitable dishes. A box is only listed as calorie-conscious when it is one of the first two.

Enjoy delicious meals with calorie-conscious recipe boxes

Calorie-conscious recipe boxes take portion control off your plate without cutting out whole food groups: the meals are already built to be lighter, so you’re not left counting calories or weighing rice yourself. On this page we’ve gathered the UK meal box providers with genuine calorie-tagged menus or full nutritional breakdowns, so you can compare them on price, recipe choice and how easy each one actually makes it to eat lighter.

What are calorie-conscious meal boxes?

Calorie-conscious meal boxes are built around portion control and lighter recipes rather than cutting out a whole food group. That makes this a different category from keto or low-carb boxes, which restrict carbohydrates specifically. A calorie-conscious recipe can still include pasta or rice, just in a smaller, calorie-counted portion.

What kind of calorie-conscious boxes are available?

Most calorie-conscious options fall into one of three groups:

  • Diet-tagged recipe boxes that flag lighter, calorie-counted meals within a wider weekly menu.
  • Nutrition-first meal boxes that show full calorie and macro breakdowns on every recipe, so you can judge for yourself rather than relying on a “light” label.
  • Ready-made calorie-controlled meals for days when you want the convenience without cooking from scratch.

How to compare calorie-conscious meal boxes

Look beyond the label. A “calorie-conscious” tag on a box or recipe usually just means lower than that provider’s own average, not necessarily low in absolute terms. Check the actual calorie count on the recipe card against what you’re aiming for, particularly if you’re following a specific target such as 1,500 or 2,000 kcal a day. It is also worth comparing recipe choice, price per serving and how many suitable meals are on the menu each week.

Which calorie-conscious box should you choose?

Green Chef tags its recipes by diet, including lighter options, which makes it one of the easier boxes to filter for specifically rather than picking through a mixed menu. Mindful Chef leans into nutrition-first cooking with full calorie and macro breakdowns on every dish, useful if you would rather check the numbers yourself than rely on a diet label. HelloFresh shows calorie information on every recipe and has a large weekly menu, so there is usually something suitable, though you do have to choose around it rather than being handed a dedicated calorie-controlled range. Gousto sits in between: strong recipe variety with clear nutritional information per dish, and enough volume to build a lighter week without the box being marketed as a diet product.

We have tested HelloFresh and Green Chef ourselves, though so far only their Dutch meal boxes rather than the UK versions. The recipe card system and calorie labelling work the same way internationally, which is why we are comfortable describing how the filtering works, even though we have not yet run a UK order with either.

Who are calorie-conscious meal boxes best for?

These boxes suit anyone who wants generally lighter meals without cutting out a whole food group, and who would rather have the portion control built in than count calories from scratch every evening. If you need strict macro or carbohydrate control rather than general portion size, the keto and low-carb categories are worth a look instead.
